TO A SUCCESSFUL FUND RAISING GOLF TOURNAMENT
The forecast for charities and nonprofits to raise funds looks cloudy. Some members and supporters of nonprofit organizations may see their participation as an "expense" to cut back on.
This does not mean golf events will not still be a good vehicle for fund raising, provided they offer a good value to players and sponsors.
Nonprofits successfully raising money through golf tournaments need to be careful. If not, they may see major sponsorships disappear and getting them back will be difficult. Keeping sponsors will mean giving them a better package, like reducing their participation cost or perhaps giving them a four-year commitment for a three-year investment. Organization overall expectations will need to be adjusted.
I encourage organizations with ongoing golf tournaments not to abandon the golfers who have supported your event in the past. They will most likely continue to play to support you even if you have to change the golf venue to lower entry fees.
As for organizations considering new ways to raise funds, a golf tournament is still a viable option. Past events, like gala balls and silent auctions, may cost more than they bring in. Golfers are still going to play golf. Having a good value for their entry fee will still motivate them.
WARNING! To continue a golf tournament or start raising funds through golf tournaments MAY NOT be the thing to do. If you already have a golf tournament, new ideas and information will be needed. No one knows everything about conducting a successful fund raising golf tournament. Doing the "same ol' same 'ol" is not going to hack it now adays.
To start up a tournament, the organization's golf planning chairperson and committee must know what they are doing. This is not the time to have a three-year learning curve.
