BOBBY STEINER BLACK BELT CHAMPION
I had been looking forward to our trip to North Carolina not only to see our son doing post-doc work at the Duke Medical Center, but to visit Bobby Steiner as well. Bobby is the golf professional who writes the golf column on our web site and is the author of MUNI, the Jitterbug Collection. If you have not been reading his column, or if you have not purchased his book, you are really missing something. His style of instruction is unique, unusual, and very beneficial to us bogie (I use the term loosely) golfers. You can secure a copy of his book direct by going to his web site from his column on our web site. Better hurry. He is about out of the first edition printing. Since he is self-promoting, he only printed 5,000 and they are about gone. PGA tournaments have even purchased his book to give to other pros in their gift bags. If you are interested in purchasing some for prizes in any tournaments you are holding, let me know. I can get them for more than half off in quantities of 10 or more.
I have to admit I was a little disappointed when we took off one morning to play the Muni course. When we got there the course was closed for aeration and green topping treatments. The grass had not started to green up either. I did meet John Mitchell, the head golf professional, but Jitterbug was nowhere around. By the way, John has beaten Jitterbug's record four 62 scores with three 61 scores. Wow! Anyway, John asked that I not take pictures of the course in its present condition. Bobby promised to send a series of digital photos later so I can do an absentee review on the course. Good thing I could not take photos, since the batteries were dead in my camera. Good planning, eh? Bobby explained to me that the course was actually in pretty good condition. Three recent Florida hurricanes had flooded the lower nine, and the course was not expected to recover for at least a year.

JOHN MITCHELL NOW HOLDS THE COURSE RECORD WITH THREE 61 SCORES
The actual name of the golf course is Buncombe County Golf Course, but everyone knows it at MUNI. It is the only municipal golf course in the Asheville area. Bobby grabbed a cart out of the garage and we tooled around the course anyway. The front nine was pretty much a flat layout with several greens to challenge the best of putters. The back nine was another world altogether. Lots of hills and blind shots. He showed be the hole where he met "Smiley," which started his career as a professional. You'll have to buy his book to learn about that story. It will be worth your while since it will teach you how Smiley taught bobby chip shots.
Rain was predicted this day, but it came later after I returned to Durham. Oh, if you are wondering about the photo of Bobby and his trophies, he had just won another tournament. At age 35 he does not see Olympics in his future, but all those trophies are for first place in free style Karate. Maybe you should reconsider, Bobby. You are not over the hill yet.
