Art Car Parade

Journal Entry #4

by: John K. Darling

This has nothing to do with golf but is just an event the Darlings took in when they made a trip to Houston to see one of their sons and to play some golf.

It will take time for you to download each of the five series, but you will enjoy the trip.

Each series consists of nine photos featuring entries in the 2003 Art Car Parade in Houston, Texas, May 10, 2003. This parade is one of the most anticipated of the year in the NASA city. It was once part of Houston's International Week but has now split off to claim its own time and space.

The first series begins with a crowd pleaser, "Man on a Couch." The last photo in series number five won first place in this year's "People's Choice" category [It is titled the Sashimi Tabernacle Choir] and has been one of the most popular entries for the past two years. It is the only car that people run to see when it passes. Its main feature is a chorus of singing bass and lobsters belting out the biblical song "Alleluia." The designers are regulars at Rice University's graduate student pub, Valhalla, which is located in the basement of campus's Keck Hall (Biochemistry/Bioengineering building).

Now enjoy the parade. Pop a cool one, sit back, and enjoy this event, which took place in sweltering heat on a sunny Saturday noon.
