Tournament List for Colorado Springs Colorado Springs Golf Course Information |
Since SeniorFriendlyGolf.com has not expanded much out of the Colorado Springs area, normally I would not list tournaments up north or out of state. Today is an exception and a good and worthy one.
Last Thursday I journeyed up to the 2004 Denver Business Tradeshow. I was curious to see if there were any interesting contacts concerning golf. There were two. One was a booth for volunteers to work at the 2005 LPGA Open to be held at Cherry Creek. More about this tournament in a later article, but you can start your research at www.2005uswomensopen.com.
The other golf related booth was unexpected, and that's what this article today is about. As I was strolling down the isles I noticed a sleek patrol car and on its side was graphic art, "Alive At 25." I had no idea what that stood for. An officer, Patrolman Scott Hinshaw, caught my eye and walked up to me and asked if I played golf, lucky guess. I had on my SeniorFriendlyGolf.com cap and my jogging suite with the logo on my chest. Do I play golf? Play "at it" is more accurate. I have a 25 handicap and am proud of it.
Scott gave me a brochure on the First Annual "Alive At 25 TROOPERS SAVING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATON GOLF TOURNAMENT and we chatted about the event and SeniorFriendlyGolf.com as well. Mike Euglow, the tournament coordinator and Fleet Director of Grease Monkey International, Inc. in Colorado joined us and we were introduced. Later Mike accompanied me to my vehicle when I left the tradeshow and I presented to him all the services and free gifts available through Advantage Golf of Colorado, with whom I work with consulting fund-raising tournament coordinators. Grease Monkey is Coordinating the event and Mike's the guy in charge.
Back to Alive At 25. This is a classroom program, four hours long, conducted by the Colorado State Patrol. Locations are throughout the state. I overheard officer Hinshaw mention to a group of observers that the hardest thing he has to do, as a law enforcement officer, is to tell parents that their child has been killed in an accident.
Over 200 young people between the ages of 15 and 25 lost their lives in Colorado last year in auto accidents. Nationally almost 6,000 died due to identified factors specifically related to teenage drivers. Those "identified factors" are the basis of classes.
The National Safety Council originally created the Alive At 25 program in 1991. It is a program designed for early intervention. We can be proud and sad at the same time about this program. Proud because the Colorado State Patrol, which started teaching classes in 1996, is the only law enforcement agency in the country that conducts this program. Sad because other state patrols do not do this. Our State Patrol officers instruct approximately 10,000 students per year. For more information: www.alive-at-25.org
About the tournament. It is listed in the tournament link of the SFG web site even though it is not in the Colorado Springs area. If you have ever desired to play golf on the premier course, managed by Troon Golf, in Castle Pines, now is the time. Yes, you will have to dig deep into your pocket for this one, but I assure you you will feel good about yourself and meet some other fine folks with whom you may be grouped. Check it out, click here.
