Last week Dennis McCann, President of Advantage Golf of Colorado, and I met with five golf tournament planners to help them maximize their tournaments. His company is up in Denver. Last year he helped me by providing certificates for free lob wedges and AvidGolfer magazines for tournaments I helped out. This year he has been gracious to come down twice a month to make visits with me and spread the word about his one-stop-for-golf-tournament-planners consulting services. What's best is he does not charge a fee and neither do I.

When I got home the day we worked together, the phone rang. The call was from Sam Parker of The International Golf Tournament up at Castle Pines. You know, the tournament Tiger does NOT play in; you know, the modified stableford thing. The stableford scoring system is something few of us understand but all of us enjoy watching . This type of golf encourages the pros to "go for it" on every shot, because it is not medal or match play. Anyway, Sam, short for Samantha I guess, asked if I wanted to volunteer to work at The International this year. I had sent in an application received back in February when I visited the 2004 Denver Golf Expo. Of course I said yes and you can look for me on the signature 12th hole this year. She's asked me to be a marshal, so I'll dig out my Colt 45s and chaps and saddle up for training in June.

DO YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE INTERNATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT? Say yes and give Sam a call at 303-550-3100 or email her: spraznik@aol.com. The tournament is August 2-8. So why is it seven days and not just the four you see on TV? There is a junior pro-am, a pro-am, and then the pros. All that takes seven days; however, if you work three days or 24 hours or more, you will receive continental breakfasts and lunches each day you work. You will also receive a complimentary badge for a guest ($150 value). Your kids 12 and under are free on days you do not work or with your guest pass visitor. Of course you will have a badge too at all times. If this is too confusing ask Sam.

So you say you have never worked at a golf tournament? They'll train you. What can you volunteer for? The following: cart coordinator, laser operator, leader boards, marshals, media, pro-am, scoring observers, souvenir sales, standard bearer, transportation, uniform distribution, and will-call trailer.

You must be 18 years old or older and there is a little financial hitch but not much considering what you will receive and the enjoyment you will feel by helping out. There is a uniform fee of $59 to $107, depending on what committee you are assigned to.

Come join me. It's going to really be fun. And if you like it, you will be well qualified to volunteer for the L.P.G.A Open in Denver next year. More about that later.
